Brighton police investigate March for England complaintsBrighton police investigate March for England complaints

Police are investigating complaints of heavy-handedness at Sunday’s March for England protest.

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, is understood to have referred to Sussex Police her concerns about footage from the March For England counter-protest in Queen’s Road, Brighton.

video posted on internet site YouTube showed a line of officers, and some on horseback, hitting unarmed protesters with batons to force them down the road.

But police have described the tactics as “professional and proportionate” and said officers were themselves facing violence.

Hecklers Anti-fascist counter-demonstrators lined the road on Sunday lunchtime to heckle the nationalist marchers, whom they accuse of far-right extremism.

The march, strung out along the road, was subjected to missiles including plates of food and drinks cans.

A ten-year-old girl taking part in the march was hit on the head but continued to take part.

The parade’s progress was repeatedly halted by demonstrators blocking the road.

Officers used batons and pepper-spray to clear them from its path.

Police eventually decided not to help the march pass the Clock Tower but to escort it into Church Street through Victoria Gardens. More clashes followed in North Laine

Former city councillor Jean Calder wrote to The Argus yesterday condemning the use of pepper spray on the counter-demonstrators.

She said: “Police are highly trained and well paid professionals.

“It is their job to uphold the law and deal with provocation without losing their temper.

“Other public servants, such as nurses and social workers have at times to deal with insults and physical abuse.

“Most do not resort to violence and neither should police.

“They should also be able to tell the difference between protesters who are law abiding and those who are not.”

Sussex Police confirmed it had received a complaint about the use of batons based on the YouTube clip, which has been circulated on social media website |Twitter.

Public safety Superintendent Steve Whitton said: “Our priority throughout the event was public safety and we acted to protect the march, the officers themselves and other members of the public.

“The brief and selective footage shows police officers acting in a professional and proportionate way when faced with hostile groups intent on stopping and attacking the march and the police officers.

“It has to be seen in the context of a complex four-hour operation in which police were regularly faced with aggressive and violent behaviour from a minority of the protesters, some of it even more violent than that shown in those brief clips.”

Fascist’ threat hits book launch

5:40pm Thursday 15th March 2012 in NewsBy Ben Parsons

An activist says he has been forced to move his book launch because of the chance the far right would disrupt the event.

Tony Greenstein planned to sign copies of his book, The Fight Against Fascism In Brighton and the South Coast, at the Friends Meeting House in Ship Street, Brighton, on Saturday.

Available at all lefty bookshops in Brighton in the “fiction” section

But officials at the venue cancelled the event, saying they were concerned it could trigger a protest.

In April last year a Unite Against Fascism (UAF) meeting at the building was interrupted when a large group carrying a Union Flag turned up outside.

Speakers at the meeting described the group as “thug-like and threatening”. The UAF claimed the protest was staged by the far-right English Defence League.

The nationalist March For England was held in the city three weeks later, with a counter-demonstration by the UAF.

Another March For England is planned for Sunday, April 22.

Mr Greenstein received an email from the Meeting House wardens saying they were concerned about violence breaking out.

Possible confrontation

It said: “We have come to this decision following concerns raised by the police about possible violent confrontation at the Meeting House on Saturday from members of right-wing groups opposed to your event.

“We have a number of other groups here that day we are particularly concerned for and do not want to get caught up in any way with confrontation.”

Sussex Police confirmed it had contacted the Meeting House but said the venue had already decided to pull the event.

A force spokesman: “Our aim is to ensure events take place peacefully and safely.

“Due to the contentious subject matter of the book, police had concerns that the event would attract the attention of people with opposing views who may wish to protest.

“Officers contacted staff at the venue to gain further information about the event to make a proper assessment as to whether there could be an impact on the local community.

“However, staff had taken the decision to cancel the event.”

Mr Greenstein has reorganised the event for 12.15pm on Saturday, March 17 at the Brighthelm Centre, in North Road, Brighton.

He told The Argus: “What better way for fascism to triumph than to bow before its demands and its threats?”

Left wing losers attempt to get family fun day in Brighton attacked

14 03 2012

Left wing morons in Brighton are attempting to incite people to attack the March for England parade in Brighton, an event which is nothing to do with “racism” but is a celebration of Englishness and always has families in attendance. Last year a small group of degenerates shouted abuse and threw bottles at the children. These people hate patriotism but thankfully are a pathetic minority. Go on MFE, we know you wont let these mugs deter you.
