FOUR Merseyside men were charged over a Liverpool city centre disturbance which left members of an anti-fascist group injured.
Liam Pinkham, 24, of Victoria Road, Wallasey, Nathan Smith, 21, of Kingsway, Huyton, Michael Kearns, 40, of Dovecot Avenue, Dovecot and a 17-year-old youth from Liverpool, who cannot be named, will appear in court next month charged with violent disorder.
They were arrested after a swoop by officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, which saw homes in Liverpool, Southport and Blackburn raided. Two other men from Blackburn were charged with the same offence.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police, who led the operation, said the charges related to a disturbance in Liverpool city centre on July 6 last year.
He added: “The charges follow a pre-planned operation by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit on October 2, 2012.
“The arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into a disturbance in Liverpool city centre on July 6, 2012.
“Three members of an anti- fascist group received minor injuries after being kicked and punched by a group of around 10 men from an extreme far- right group, who then ran away from the scene.”
It is believed the violence erupted on Bold Street, where people were attending an anti-fascism event.
It is not known whether the men charged are members of the extremist group, the name of which was not released.
Det Supt Mark Smith, of the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, previously said there was “no specific threat” in connection with the arrests.
He added: “As part of the NWCTU’s remit, we investigate domestic extremism, which is an unlawful action that can be part of a protest or campaign.”
All six men will appear before Liverpool Magistrates Court on February 7.
