Do any of you recognise this statue and the building where it’s situated?
No? OK, so here’s a wider shot of the building in question …
Yep! It’s the recently revamped BBC Headquarters in Central London. New Broadcasting House, as it’s known these days, which cost the BBC TV Licence payers telly tax payers a cool ONE BILLION pounds. The very same building where BBC DG George Entwistle announced his resignation, due to the Jimmy Savile scandal, and collected a huge payoff from the Chairman of the BBC Trust.
Anyway, the original building was constructed in the 1930’s complete with a statue of an adult posing with a naked child. And it gets weirder or more perverted, depending on which way you look at it. The sculptor of the BBC statue was someone called Eric Gill. Never heard of him? Well, here is an interesting extract from his Wikipedia entry (and, yes, I have checked it for accuracy) :
A deeply religious man, largely following the Roman Catholic faith, his beliefs and practices were by no means orthodox.[17]His personal diaries describe his sexual activity in great detail including the fact that Gill sexually abused his own children, had an incestuous relationship with his sister and performed sexual acts on his dog. This aspect of Gill’s life was little known until publication of the 1989 biography by Fiona MacCarthy. The earlier biography by Robert Speaight mentioned none of it.
Hmmm. So what do you think of the BBC statue now then? In light of recent events at the BBC, involving large-scale paedophilia, is it wise that the BBC appear to be continuing to support the work of someone who was known for child abuse, incest and bestiality?
