Maureen Messent: An open letter to the Birmingham Mail

Dear Sirs,

Maureen Messent is correct that many under-achieving white English children ‘have parent(s) with no incentives to encourage their progeny to succeed’. However, I have to ask, where does she think these parents were educated? Does she think they appeared out of thin air, that everyone decided en-masse they would apathetic with regards to the future of their children? The fact of the matter is that the parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents of the children she refers to are products of our education system. It is a system which has been failing the majority of ordinary working class people for decades. If this is not the case, then I must assume that Messent is implying that the English working class are in some way inferior, which I am sure she isn’t, as that would be undeniably racist.

The education system has failed, and continues to fail, generation upon generation of English working class schoolchildren. Discipline was abandoned (now reintroduced for some strange reason) in British schools along with society in general. Tried and tested successful teaching methods have been replaced with one failed experiment after another. We are now seeing the culmination of that failing in the people she so callously dehumanises with provocative language I dare her to use when referring to any other social or ethnic group. Of course, she won’t utilise similar language or stereotypes with other ethnicities. If she did, she would be breaking National Union of Journalists guidelines, but because it’s the English working class, we are viewed as fair game by Messent and unfortunately your newspaper by association.

Unlike other previously under-achieving social groups, the English working class, now a minority in its own right according to a recent survey by research group Britain Thinks, has, up to now, been continually overlooked and ignored by the system which identifies and combats under-achieving children from other minority groups. The reasons why are obvious, the English working class has been deserted by its traditional benefactors such as the church, robbed of its organs of defence such as the Labour Party or trade unions. Therefore, with no-one to speak for them, English working class concerns such as education, but also housing, welfare and employment have been routinely ignored by successive governments.

Yes, there are many white English families now receiving benefits, but to dismiss them all as workshy or unwilling to secure decent jobs is wrong, not just because it is stereotypical and discriminatory, but because it is incorrect. Anyone who lives in the real world knows that there simply aren’t the same amount of jobs there once were and the population has increased, not to mention competition from low-overhead and in some cases subsidised economic migrants under-cutting many domestic job-seekers for the few vacant positions which remain in the UK. It’s only become relevant now, because the ignorant, like Messent, often seek scapegoats when the going gets tough. Just like politicians who seek the lowest common denominator to blame for their own mistakes, the weakest in society are easier prey than the real culprits.

These people, who Messent cruelly and unnecessarily dehumanises with terminology such as ‘bovine’, are in actual fact the abandoned English working class, surplus to requirements now our manufacturing is farmed out to third world sweat-shops. With the country’s manufacturing industries in terminal decline and few employment prospects, these abandoned people have been left to rot in white council estate ghettos. Yes, a benefits culture is encouraged, but who by? To say these under-educated and therefore depoliticised people are the architects of their own destiny, to say they have engineered the situation, is laughable, not to mention crass.

What we are actually seeing is the result of abject cowardice by our politicians, who now care more about short-term gain, re-election and power than they do about the national interest and the personal development of their electorate. Well, when I say electorate, this is where the reason behind the dereliction of the working class becomes obvious: a poor education results in lower expectations, it also results in people becoming detached from the democratic process. The situation has been engineered, but not by the people Messent is keen to single-out, victimise and blame. Our industry has been allowed to crumble, in preference to the low-hassle but high exploitation of people from the third world, particularly the far-east. It isn’t in the interests of our establishment to improve education standards for English working class kids, nor kick-start manufacturing, because if they did, it would mean ordinary people would expect gainful employment. Where would the jobs come from?

I think the one interesting phrase is Messent’s use of the word ‘lumpen’, if she is using one definition of the word, then she actually agrees with me that the people concerned are dispossessed or displaced, people who have been cut off from the socio-economic class with which they would ordinarily be identified. If she is using the other definition, vulgar or common, which she obviously must be, then she is being unnecessarily offensive.

Messent branded parents she doesn’t know as ‘barely-literate’and ‘idle’, she said they are people who ‘couldn’t give a damn if their children succeed at school or not’. She stereotyped them as people in ‘subsidised homes’ which sprouted ‘huge TV screens where the rest of us shelve our books’. It became ironically farcical that she then went on to label them as ‘abysmally ignorant lumps of bigotry’, which were exactly the qualities she had herself displayed throughout this ill-thought out piece of defamatory nonsense.

The Birmingham Mail has severely let itself down by publishing such discriminatory bilge. It’s unfair, biased and if any other socio-ethnic group was singled out and publicly horsewhipped in such a manner it would be condemned and Messent would be out of a job.

March For England Sunday April 22nd

March for England will be convening outside Brighton Train station at no later than 11.30 on the 22nd April 2012. The British police are slightly less of a disgrace than they were a couple of years ago. Back in the not too distant past there was little reporting of native British girls being drugged, groomed, raped and murdered by gangs of Muslim males in our towns and cities.

This wall of silence was erected in the interests of “community cohesion,” a modern verbal concept invented by our liberal elites who think it is better that the indigenous population remain unaware of the horrifying abuse carried out by British Muslims. This is understandable, because to be aware might make even the most fluffy headed of liberals question the benefits of mass Muslim migration into the liberal democracy that was once Great Britain.

That is one way of explaining their historical silence I suppose. The fact that Mohammed consummated his marriage to six year-old Aisha when she was only nine might also play a part in the whole sordid affair, along with the fact that Muslim males consider Muslim females to be second class citizens – let alone infidel females.

But now the liberal silence has been broken, we appear to suffering from an absolute epidemic of Muslim paedophilia and abuse. Dewsbury, Leeds, Blackburn, Blackpool, Derby, Rochdale, Birmingham etc etc all seem to have their very own Islamic gang-rape-of-under age-children-enclaves, with the recent additions of Oxford and Glasgow. The ongoing benefits of multiculturalism we are constantly being told to celebrate are certainly well represented geographically, it must be said.

If this was a situation where gangs of white males were raping young Muslim girls it would have been headline news a long time ago, but sadly the native British are now very much second class citizens within their own homeland. In these perverse multicultural times we live in, all cultures are equal except ours.

If the BBC and Germaine Greer are not too busy over the next few days, perhaps they might like to comment on this matter. As the eternal espousers of feminism, it would appear only right to do so. Whilst they are at it, perhaps they might also like to weigh in on the 17,000 cases of Muslim “Honour” violence cases reported by the Independent, along with a recent report stating  one in five Muslims thinks it permissible to inflict physical violence on women who dishonour their families. (It is one of those odd facets of multiculturalism that such dishonour could be incurred by dating a native Brit.)

But even though the British police have finally plucked up sufficient bravery to overcome the sheer awfulness of being called nasty playground names, and are now belatedly actually doing something to protect our children from Muslim rapists and paedophiles, it might be some time before British feminists and the BBC also garner such courage.

Left-wing ideology still thinks of Muslims as a minority to be protected in the face of relentless oppression by the native British. But quite how a lone thirteen year-old girl could oppress a gang of adult bearded males after being drugged, or rendered comatose via vodka, is one of those not altogether incidental questions the BBC feminists and Ms Greer should really be asking themselves.

And it is important that they do. We are already at the early stages of a tribal/religious civil war in Britain, courtesy of the immigration and appeasement policies of ALL the political traitor class. The Muslim rape of our children now appears to be a driving force in what over the coming years can only make civil war inevitable.

If you think this is an overreaction, please read the following paragraphs, taken from a recentIndependent article about white riots in Rochdale:

 ”We are innocent people loyal to the community,” proclaimed the posters adorning the windows of the Tasty Bites takeaway yesterday. If we are guilty, why the police have not arrested us? Why we are still working? Why our shop is still open?”

But on Monday, takeaways in the Heywood area of Rochdale were mentioned in media coverage of a child sex gang trial involving 11 Asian men at Liverpool Crown Court. Racial tensions have been simmering ever since and on Thursday night they erupted when a demonstration, apparently organised on social media, in protest at the allegations, degenerated into violence.

Up to 150 people – many of them children – took to the streets, some of them brandishing racist placards. During the evening the mob began pelting police with bricks and targeting takeaways on the main shopping parade before being dispersed by riot vans.

Taxi drivers were threatened and an Asian pizza delivery man had his vehicle attacked. A police officer suffered bruising and two people, including a 14-year-old boy, were arrested.

Although Mr Ahmed and his family have nothing to do with the trial or the alleged events which are said to have taken place prior to his purchase of the business, his livelihood has collapsed since Monday. “I have lost all my customers – not a word of a lie. We are suffering. Last night they were doing all sorts of stuff – shouting ‘get the rapist out’. ‘Paedophile’. Quite abusive words.

“The police were there but they were quite limited and they asked us to close the business. It will take me five to 10 years to build it back up again. We have had so many phone calls giving abuse – all kinds of threats; threatening to burn the shop down.”

Four people are employed at Tasty Bites and Mr Ahmed has mortgaged his family home in order to set his son-in-law Ammir Rafiq up in business. Each works seven days a week until at least 1am.

But not last night. Like the other Asian businesses in this predominantly white community, they were rolling down the shutters early as police called for calm and promised a “robust” approach to any further trouble.

Amid the rumours swirling around the town are fears that elements of the far-right might be preparing to exploit the tensions. There have already been calls to ban an English Defence League march due to take place in the nearby town of Hyde following an alleged attack on a white teenager by Asian youths earlier this month.

But no one knows what will happen in Heywood, which has hitherto escaped the kind of rioting which so badly scarred near-neighbours Oldham, Burnley and Bradford in recent years.

The sense of foreboding was palpable. At Eagle Cars 2000, where the drivers are predominantlyAsian, most went home early as trouble flared. “One driver told me they saw baseball bats and they were getting out of town. They are frightened as is everybody. The base staff were frightened, I was frightened,” said manager Katie Turner.

Darren Taylor, manager at Domino’s Pizza, said one of his drivers was surrounded. “They were banging and kicking on the car and calling him a paedo and a Paki,” he said.

Police, meanwhile, urged parents to be aware of where young people were over the coming days. Superintendent Chris Hankinson, from Greater Manchester Police said: “Those that seek to use what’s going on at the moment in Liverpool to further their racist agenda will be dealt with robustly.”

The disturbances were condemned by community leaders. Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Manchester-based Ramadhan Foundation, said: “Mob rule or vigilantism is not the way we conduct ourselves in this country.” Colin Lambert, leader of Rochdale Council, said: “Let’s keep the cohesion together. This is about protecting families and children.”

These quisling policemen and council leaders are a little too late. Memo to Superintendent Hankinson, we are not trying to further our racist agenda, we are protesting about racism carried out against us. And Memo to council leader Lambert, there is no cohesion to keep together you half-wit, and you are way too late to have the sheer bare faced effrontery to talk about protecting families and children in Rochdale, having already betrayed the native British families and children within your manor through your politically correct silence.

Muslim Child Grooming Gangs.. Cultural Epidemic or Opportunists on the Prowl?

TWO years ago I said that Blackpool was not an isolated case when 60 suspected cases of Child Grooming were reported. At least two of those girls are missing presumed murdered and investigations continue into the death of Paige Chivers. Let’s not even talk about the farce of the investigation into the Charlene Downes murder, as I shall digress greatly from the purpose of this post …

Sadly for this country it’s becoming clear that in pretty much every one of our Towns and Cities, the length of the country, Muslim men are preying on innocent VULNERABLE children. Let’s look at the facts here. Rochdale, Telford, Oxford, Blackpool, Burnley, Rotherham, Derby, to name a few,  all Towns within our Cities where current or ongoing criminal investigations are being carried out against Muslim grooming gangs.  So why suddenly the epidemic? .. Has the issue of Muslim grooming become so widespread that the authorities are only NOW deciding to tackle the problem or is it more a case of community cohesion?. If the authorities ignore there is a problem, will it go away?..If the authorities publicise the issue of Muslim grooming gangs is it likely to limit the number of victims in the long run, or cause unrest in multi cultural Towns and Cities?, Even more so, will the authorities come under scrutinisation?.  A great number of these girls who have reported being victims after all, have been through the care system or are still very much involved with Social Services for one reason or another.  These are some of the question you need to ask yourself.

Are the authorities only JUST beginning to recognise trends?  More importantly why has it become so “acceptable” in Muslim fast food and taxi businesses to encourage and condone the ritual abuse of vulnerable white children (often from care homes).

What separates a Muslim Grooming gang from your everyday unscrupulous predatory white paedophile? I have my own views on this, pretty strong one’s too.  (No surprises there). , the MO of a Muslim grooming gang bears no reflection whatsoever on the accepted criminal profile of known paedophiles.

Extensive research into the background, common traits and case profiling of a white paedophile in today’s society suggests they will often pick a child known to them, they will prey on that child gaining confidence for a period of time, and the whole sickening affair is based on control, manipulation and threats towards the child.  The paedophile knows fully that in order to manipulate the child they must first gain trust. They also know that in Western society what they are doing is highly immoral, criminal, demoralising to society and carries harsh sentences. Convictions lead to being answerable to the full extent of the British judicial system, from initial sentencing, through to probation, prevention and rehabilitation.

Now let’s look at Muslim grooming gangs.  From what we know so far from previous cases, young vulnerable teenagers are befriended by these gangs, simply plied with food, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Taken to flats or houses of the perpetrator and abused, often not by one man but by several.  They are made to believe they are acting in an adult fashion and in some cases “part of the gang”.   There have even been cases where the victim has assumed herself the “girlfriend” of the perpetrator, or has  been told that she is “loved!” .  In some cases many girls have been involved, no doubt thinking it’s “cool” and grown up to be paid such attention and driven round in top of the range cars, being given money and being “spoilt”. Remember that often these girls have come from broken homes where they are crying out for attention and the unconditional love of an adult.   In other cases it has even been suggested that the girls “consented!!.  Jack straw himself referred to the fact that in some Muslim communities the general perception was that “white girls are easy”.  Even if the girl did consent this is still ritual abuse, rape and sexual manipulation of a minor who let’s face it, probably didn’t even know better.

Now one could say that the problem is a cultural issue given the fact that the trend now appears to be UK wide and not isolated to certain Northern communities as was previously suspected.  After all, Islamic religion is particularly astute on the virtues of sex outside of marriage and on the morals that Muslim women must uphold.  The Qur’an itself when translated literally teaches that in certain situations, sex with a minor is not frowned upon.

The other question you need to ask is this, do Muslim grooming gangs exist because childhood copulation is an acceptable part of the Islamic culture and Muslim men may often be sexually repressed due to the teachings of Islam, or is it simply a case that word spreads,  ideas catch on, the opportunity was there and they have simply been getting away with it for too damn long!!

My conclusion is this, their culture and communities do not condemn their behaviour.  The authorities have in the past turned a blind eye.  Social Services have done jack shit to protect these girls when they where in their care.  Preying on “white easy meat” is a walk in the park when these girls are crying out for love and attention.  Word of mouth spreads, if you can get away with in Rotherham your cousin can do the same in Telford!!.. Culture doesn’t stop them.. but opportunity allows it.

Well done all the people who have either demo’d on the streets or taken part in phone and email/letter campaigns regarding halal meat being imposed on an unsuspecting public. The main problem with halal meat is that if big companies like KFC. Dominos, Subway etc are doing behind the scenes deals with halal companies (many of which import meat from Pakistan and Saudi) then British farming will be served another death blow, and those farmers wont even know why. No to halal. Its cruel but more importantly it is helping to kill our farming industry. Our demos are paying off. NFSE

Ministers are preparing to change the law to ensure that meat slaughtered in accordance with strict Islamic law cannot be sold to unwitting members of the public.
The Government is drawing up plans to prevent schools, hospitals, pubs and famous sporting venues from serving halal meat secretly to customers.
The move will be welcomed by animal rights campaigners, who argue that the traditional Islamic way of preparing meat – which involves killing animals by drawing a knife across their throats without stunning them first – is cruel and causes unnecessary pain.

It follows a Mail on Sunday investigation in September 2010 which discovered that beef, chicken and lamb had been sold to fans at Wembley without them knowing it had been prepared in accordance with sharia law.
Cheltenham College was found to be one of several public schools serving halal chicken to pupils without informing them, while Whitbread, Britain’s biggest hotel and restaurant group, admitted that more than three- quarters of its poultry was halal. MPs were furious to discover halal meat had even been sold in House of Commons canteens without them knowing.

In 2003, Government advisory body the Farm Animal Welfare Council published a report declaring that the halal method of killing ‘would inevitably trigger a barrage of sensory information to the brain in a sensible (conscious) animal .  .  . such a massive injury would result in very significant pain and distress in the period before insensibility supervenes’.
Muslim leaders insist that animal welfare measures are observed during slaughter.

Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, said: ‘This sounds like a very progressive move. We have been pushing the EU to act for some time. If the Government is going to take this step, it will help consumers to make an ethical choice.’
A Defra spokesman said: ‘We believe people should continue to be able to buy meat prepared in accordance with their religion, but that people should also be able to find out how a product was prepared when they are buying in shops or eating out.
‘We are keeping all policies under review, including our approach to labelling.’

Three men were remanded in custody today when they made their first appearance in court accused of preying on vulnerable young girls and grooming them for sex.

A total of 13 men were arrested in Oxford on Thursday by police investigating claims 24 girls under 16 were targeted by the gang.

Brothers Anjum Dogar, 30, and Akhtar Dogar, 31, both of Tawney Street, Oxford, and Kamar Jamil, 26, of Aldrich Road, Oxford, stood in the dock at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court accused of a string of offences including rape, conspiring to rape a child, arranging child prostitution and trafficking.

Three other defendants were due to appear before High Wycombe magistrates later this afternoon.

Blackburn Council get £200,000 to “tackle” “right wing extremism” and have started using the money to harass patriots #EDL #BLACKBURN

Despite the fact that Blackburn is a hotbed of Muslim extremism and has seen many anti-white attacks and a murder, Blackburn council have been given 200 grand of taxpayers money to tackle the “threat” of “right wing extremism”. In other words,what they are saying is, lets do the multicultural utopia thing and blame white people for all the trouble. Blackburn activists are being targeted for harrassment by various departments of the council with one having his car illegally towed away among other incidents where Social Services have started giving grief and poking their noses in to activists family lives.

If this harrassment continues a demo will be called in protest against it. £200,000 will magically disappear one Saturday afternoon, along with a lot more money. You illegally harass patriots and a demo will follow, as is our democratic right. That is your one and only warning. We dont want to demo Blackburn, and there are several groups that may choose to demo on different days, adding to your workload, but harrassing our people just for using their right to protest will not be tolerated.

BLACKBURN will be given a six-figure windfall to help the area deal with right wing extremism.

The council has been chosen to lead the way with tackling community integration issues following its response to the English Defence League protest last April.

Council leader Kate Hollern welcomed the funding boost to tackle ‘the menace’ of the EDL and far-right organisations.

The high-profile 2011 demo was Lancashire Police’s biggest ever operation, but passed off without major incident.

EDL leader Tommy Robinson was later convicted of headbutting one of his own group during a flashpoint, but violence between rival protesters was minimal, as was damage to the town.

Along with Luton, which has a strong far-right presence, Blackburn with Darwen Council has been allocated more than £200,000 to counter community divisions.

The cash, from the Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government, will be spent on community projects to encourage integration.

It will build on work done by the council, police and partners around the EDL demo, which included events to keep teenagers out of the town centre and involved in positive activity. Community groups looking to start up cohesion projects will be able to bid for money.

The rise in prominence of far right extremist groups such as the EDL has increased tensions in East Lancashire towns with strong Muslim communities.

It has led to officers running the ground-breaking counter-terrorism programme Channel to redraft guidance to take into account the growing threat.

Parents, teachers, community leaders and police officers are now referring children and young adults who they feel may be at risk of being radicalised by groups such as the English Defence League.

Coun Hollern said: “We are delighted that the Government has asked BwD to lead a national special interest group of councils on integration and cohesion, working closely with Luton Borough Council.

“In particular this reflects our hard work with local people and local partners on tackling the continuing menace of the EDL and other extreme far right groups.

“The country faces many risks on extremism and this project recognises these risks are not just from one community, and that BwD is a leading council in providing solutions on the ground.”

Here, in Britain, millions of the barely-literate, idle and bovine couldn’t give a damn if their children succeed at school or not.

Their subsidised homes sprout huge TV screens where the rest of us shelve our books. Oh, they read all night. Usually TV listing magazines they describe as “books”.

And they are, let’s be honest, abysmally ignorant lumps of bigotry.

The children who knock them out of sight – especially the young Somalis who have fled from untold martial horror – are eager to learn. Not for them the council sink estate torpor and sloth.

They want to be doctors, accountants, teachers. Young Bangladeshis, whose hard-up fathers were prepared to wait on tables in curry houses, are joining the professional classes.

Behind them is a parental knowledge that education is the safe path from the ghetto.

And behind our white lads is the parental belief that life in the ghetto, state-supported, is good enough.

The only time these lumpen grab-alls get off their backsides is when they protest that “immigrants take all our jobs”.

Tragic: 87-year-old Dorothy Griffiths was left unattended for ten minutes because her Muslim nurse was praying, an inquest heard
An elderly woman who suffered a fall was left lying on the floor at a care home for up to ten minutes because a senior nurse was praying, an inquest heard.
Abdul Bhutto, an agency nurse, told junior staff they would have to wait until he finished before he would attend to 87-year-old Dorothy Griffiths, who died nine days later.
Mrs Griffiths, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, was left on the floor while the Muslim nurse continued to pray on his mat.
Eventually he arrived and examined the pensioner before telling carers to put her back to bed. She was later found unresponsive and was taken to hospital.
Mrs Griffiths had cut her head and gashed her hip when she fell from her bed during the night and was found on the floor when staff rushed to her room after hearing a loud bang.
A carer went to the care home’s office for help to lift her but Mr Bhutto, who was in charge, said they would have to wait until he had finished his prayers.
Carer Zoe Shaw told the inquest: ‘It took between five and ten minutes because he was praying. A staff member told me we had to wait for him to finish.’

The inquest heard Mr Bhutto was the most senior nurse on duty.
He examined Mrs Griffiths on the floor but did not call an ambulance and instructed carers to put her back to bed.
But instead Mrs Shaw, worried that she might fall again, washed the pensioner, dressed her and sat with her in the office.

At about 5.45am she took Mrs Griffiths to the lounge and said she appeared to be well and was ‘talking fine’ and walking around.
But at breakfast time Mrs Griffiths was found to be unresponsive and an ambulance was called at about 7.30am.
Mrs Shaw, who broke down and wept during her evidence, said she would have called an ambulance immediately after the fall.

She said that as a carer she did not realise she could and since this incident she had discovered staff could override a nurse’s decision. Mrs Griffiths, a former pub landlady and the widow of former Barnsley footballer Steve Griffiths, had been a resident at the privately-run Valley Park Nursing Home in Wombwell, near Barnsley, since 2009 and died in hospital on November 3.
Mr Bhutto failed to appear at the inquest in Sheffield and a summons had to be issued for him to attend later in the year.
The court heard he had been contacted and denied being senior nurse that night.
After the hearing was adjourned, Mrs Griffiths’s daughter Jean David, 61, said the family had been put through more grief due to the nurse not turning up.
Mrs David added: ‘You put your trust in these people.
‘What would happen if there was a fire, would they then stop praying?’
It is understood Mrs Griffiths died from a brain haemorrhage and pneumonia although this has yet to be confirmed.
A spokesman for the home, which is run by the Mimosa Healthcare Group, declined to comment.

Muggers target Burnley teenager twice

A TEENAGER is recovering after twice falling victim to a pair of would-be muggers on a main road in Burnley.

The 15-year-old was walking home along Todmorden Road on Tuesday when he was confronted by two fellow teenagers outside the Flower Bowl store and post office, demanding his iPhone.

Police say the attackers, who struck around 4.20pm, were disturbed when a passing motorist, in a red car, intervened.

But when the 15-year-old continued along Todmorden Road, the two muggers returned and threatened the victim with a knife, as he passed the Spar shop.

Though the boy was punched in the head the pair were again thwarted when another driver, this time in a blue car, stepped in.

Police have now launched an appeal to identify the muggers. who ran off towards the Burnley Wood area after they were disturbed a second time.

Each of them is said to be Asian and aged around 16 or 17. One was around 6ft tall, medium build and was wearing a black hooded top.

The second boy was 5ft 9 ins tall, was slimmer, and was wearing a grey hooded top.

Det Con Ashley Johnston from Pennine CID said: “Fortunately the victim was not seriously hurt and the offenders escaped empty handed.

“This incident happened in peak traffic time on a very busy main road out of Burnley. I would reassure people that an investigation is underway but also appeal for any witnesses to come forward with information that could assist police, particularly the two members of the public who stopped in their vehicles to help the victim.”

Suspected Toulouse gunman arrested

THE suspect in three deadly shootings in southern France was reportedly arrested early today after admitting to the murders and describing himself as an al-Qa’ida supporter.

The arrest of Mohammed Merah, reported by French television, came several hours after police special forces officers exchanged fire with the besieged man in his flat in Toulouse.

French police said early today explosives had been found in car of the suspect’s brother.

Merah, a 24-year-old French citizen of Algerian descent, injured three policemen during a heavily armed stand-off at his Toulouse apartment.

News that the man who has killed seven people over the past two weeks was a Muslim extremist motivated by anger at French military interventions abroad was seized on by far-Right presidential candidate Marine le Pen, who said France had long ignored an internal Islamic threat.

With the cold-blooded murder of seven people coming just five weeks before presidential elections, the National Front leader said that until now the nation “has been frightened of looking (the terrorist threat) in the face.”

Ms Le Pen told French TV that France should wage war against “these fundamentalist political and religious groups that are killing our children”.

A television news channel said the gunman had called it shortly before the police raid to say that he had filmed the killings of three Muslim soldiers, three Jewish children and a rabbi, and that he was planning to post the footage on the internet within hours.

Ebba Kalondo, the editor-in-chief of France 24, said the caller had warned that more killings were to come and had identified himself by giving details of the number of bullets fired in the three crimes and the type of arms used.

But before dawn, police raided his apartment, which was less than 2km from the Jewish school where four victims were killed with close-range shots to the head on Monday.

Merah fired through the front door, hitting one officer in the knee and injuring another, with a third officer apparently hit during further exchanges of fire.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said Merah had yelled to a police negotiator through his barricaded door, and later spoke to officers on a mobile phone.

Merah promised he would surrender later in the day but a few hours later negotiations broke down and he stopped talking to police.

“He claims to be a mujaheddin and to belong to al-Qa’ida,” Mr Gueant said at the scene.

“He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to take revenge on the French army because of its foreign interventions.”

Merah is believed to have trained with the Pakistani Taliban in Pakistan. His Algerian-born mother had been taken to the scene to help talk him out of the apartment but she told police she had little influence over him.

Police blew up Merah’s van parked near the apartment and said it contained a small machine gun and other weapons.

Merah surrendered a .45 Colt handgun in exchange for a mobile phone but was believed to still have a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Mini-Uzi 9mm machine pistol and other handguns.

The swift tracking down of the suspect could prove a coup for President Nicolas Sarkozy, who ordered the nation’s highest-ever terrorist alert. Mr Sarkozy’s supporters will be relieved that the killer does not appear to be an anti-immigrant extremist.

But the incident could still prove embarrassing to the security and intelligence services who had been tracking his activities for years after suggestions Merah may have been living in France while on the run from a prison in Afghanistan. Ghulam Faruq, the director of Kandahar prison, told Reuters that a Frenchman with the same name was jailed for planting bombs but escaped in a mass Taliban jailbreak in 2008.

The first three murder victims were soldiers of North African descent and the subsequent targeting of Jewish victims prompted suggestions from some politicians that the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Mr Sarkozy and Ms Le Pen in the early stages of the election campaign had contributed to a volatile social environment.

Police said Merah had been an early suspect because he had visited Pakistan and Afghanistan and had been in contact with Islamic militants, “then the criminal investigation police brought in crucial evidence”.

Police tracked Merah through the Yamaha motorbike he used during the shootings and through an internet address he had used to set up a meeting with the first victim, Imad Ibn Ziaten, a 30-year-old paratrooper who had advertised the bike for sale. Police discovered he had asked at a garage how to turn off a tracking device.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad expressed resentment at Merah’s citing of the Palestinian cause to justify his attacks.

“It is time for these criminals to stop marketing their terrorist acts in the name of Palestine and to stop pretending to stand up for the rights of Palestinian children who only ask for a decent life,” he said.

On March 11 Staff Sergeant Ziaten, a 30-year-old member of the 1st Parachute Logistics Regiment, was shot in the head at close range with the .45 calibre pistol, a method that was to become the suspect’s signature.

Four days later three more paratroopers from another regiment were gunned down, two of them fatally, in the same fashion in a street in the nearby garrison town of Montauban.

The dead – Corporal Abel Chennouf, 25, and Private First Class Mohammed Legouade, 23, both of the 17th Parachute Engineering Regiment – were French soldiers of North African Arab origin. Corporal Chennouf, who leaves a pregnant finance, Caroline, was buried last night.

Mr Sarkozy and his Socialist rival for the presidency Francois Hollande were due to attend a memorial ceremony for the slain soldiers in Montauban early today.

Staff Sergeant Ziaten was to be buried in Morocco.
