Kill the Brits graffiti on blitz memorial
29 08 2011Steel guard for London Blitz memorial defaced by
‘racist’ ‘Kill the Brits’ vandals
Last updated at 10:14 PM on 13th August 2011
A war memorial to honour civilians killed in the London Blitz has had to have protective 5ft high metal railings built around it after youths scrawled offensive slogans on it including ‘Kill the Brits’.
The elegant modern sculpture of a dove in flight, the traditional sign of peace, sits in the Hermitage Memorial Park, Wapping, overlooking the River Thames in London’s East End and has been subjected to continual graffiti attacks since its unveiling three years ago.
Behind bars: The eye-catching symbol of peace has had to be fenced off after it was vandalised
Residents of the borough of Tower Hamlets, one of the capital’s most ethnically diverse communities, have long blamed local youths for the attacks on the £80,000 memorial, which some think may be racially motivated.
One, who asked not to be named, said that some of the vandalism on the side of the monument facing the river was ‘hostile and horrible’.
‘Anyone walking along the path in front of the park would have noticed that the front of the memorial was covered in Asian names and what appeared to be the tags of Asian gangs,’ the resident said.
‘This part of London is a multi-racial area so in a way you would expect that. You would think it was just the work of local kids.
‘But what passers-by didn’t see was the vandalism and the graffiti on the side facing the river. Some people felt it was clearly racist – and it did include phrases such as “Kill the Brits”.’
Local resident
The vandalism has been particularly upsetting for those who fought a long campaign to establish the park, which is built on the site of a former Second World War bomb shelter. London’s East End was one of the areas worst affected by the Blitz. Hermitage Memorial Park is now a popular attraction and the monument, the work of acclaimed local sculptor Wendy Taylor, is a local landmark.
But the battle against the graffiti thugs has been unrelenting – with the vandals seemingly going out of their way to defile the monument.
On one occasion Ms Taylor, who lives close to the park, had to flee the site after she confronted a number of hostile youths who she felt were disrespecting the sculpture.
And even when wire fencing was erected around the monument last year so a £10,000 clean-up operation could begin, the attacks continued. On one occasion, a group of youths was spotted trying to break through the wire with bolt-cutters.
Ms Taylor, who has now managed to clean the sculpture, installed the new railings in February and so far they have kept the memorial safe.
Frank Muldoon, a member of the Hermitage Environment Group, which raised the funds to pay for the sculpture, said: ‘The railings are not something we wanted but the monument was being defaced so we had to.
Devastation: Rescuers search for survivors after a bombing raid on the East End of London in September 1940
‘I personally don’t think the graffiti was racially motivated. I remember seeing names scrawled on it and the gang tags.
‘It is true they were probably Asian in origin but people should not read too much into that. This area has a lot of Asian young people so in a sense you would expect that.’
Jim Fitzpatrick, the local Labour MP, said: ‘It is sad that we have had to protect the monument in this way but if this is the price we have to pay then so be it.’
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘In 2010 we did receive reports of antisocial behaviour and criminal damage occurring in and around the memorial park in Wapping. In particular, the criminal damage appeared to centre around the war memorial within the park.
‘The fence was erected in February and there have been no further reports of criminal damage within the park or directed towards the memorial.’

Taxi sex attacker walks free
29 08 2011A RAWTENSTALL cabbie who sexually attacked a terrified woman passenger has walked free from court, after a judge said she had to follow sentencing guidelines.
Shamraz Akhtar, 28, a married father-of-two, had groped and fondled the 23-year-old victim in the two minute journey to her home after a night out in the town.
She eventually leapt from the vehicle and ran home, where her partner was waiting at the door, Burnley Crown Court heard.
Another taxi driver was arrested over the assaults but the defendant went to visit him at his home, apologised and owned up.
He was arrested but made no comment when questioned, even after being picked out on an identity parade.
Akhtar, who claimed he had been aroused as the woman was scantily clad, received 26 weeks in jail, suspended for two years, with 12 months supervision and 120 hours unpaid work.
The defendant, of Paget Street, Highfield, Keighley, had admitted two counts of sexual assault, on February 11.
He will be on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
Jane Dagnall, prosecuting, said at about 1.40am, got into the front passemger seat of the taxi and paid the fare straight away.
She rang her boyfriend to tell him she was on her way and asked him to be be at the front door waiting for her.
As she finished the call, Akhtar held out his hand, as if to return the money and asked the victim: “Can you not pay with sex?”
The woman was upset and angry. The defendant continued to drive.
Miss Dagnall said Akhar suddenly leaned over and put his hand down the passenger’s top and groped her.
She hit out and screamed at him to get off. The defendant then moved his hand to the top of her thigh and the woman was by this time very scared as Akhtar was not driving in the right direction for her hone.
She told him her partner was waiting and the defendant began to drive in the correct direction, but was slowing down. The victim jumped from the cab and ran home.
Catherine Hollins, defending, said his wife had left him, he had lost his job and he would not be employed as a taxi driver again.
Judge Lunt said guidelines for such an offence was for a community order.
She said: “It may be that many people, especially women, will see that as ridiculously lenient.”

Six arrested after suspicious explosion in Leicester kebab shop
29 08 2011Two men and four women have been arrested after a kebab shop in Leicester was destroyed in a blast.
Emergency services were called to reports of an explosion at a shop in Narborough Road about 0220 BST.
Crews found the building had been demolished. The cause of the explosion was being investigated, police said.
“However, at this stage the incident is believed to be suspicious and a criminal investigation is under way,” a police spokesman added.
There were no reports of injuries and it is not believed that anyone was in the building at the time of the incident.
Several adjoining properties have been evacuated as a safety precaution. Parts of Narborough Road have been closed while investigations are carried out.
Leicestershire Constabulary have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Mosque users block street
27 08 2011A mosque which opened without permission is facing an investigation into its use and complaints about worshippers parking in the streets.
A former plumbing supplies store on the corner of Harewood Street, in Humberstone, has been used as a mosque for the past week.
Neighbours said the number of visitors’ cars for evening prayers had made the narrow street impassable.
Leicester City Council has launched an investigation into the use as a mosque.
One resident of Harewood Street, who did not want to be named, said: “There are problems with parking and cars are being scratched.
“But the other big worry is that they could never get a fire engine into the road – you can’t get a normal car through.”
A 29-year-old woman who lives in the road, said: “The other night I found it impossible to get out of the street.
“The city council has closed part of Fernie Road and the parking was crazy at the top of Harewood Street.
“People are parking wherever – in the middle of the road, even.”
The one-storey building was bought in June by members of Masjid At-Taqwa mosque on the other side of Harewood Street. The original mosque is now solely used for women.
Idris Waraich, 50, of the mosque’s committee, said members of the community had raised £300,000 to buy the derelict building, which was being refurbished as a mosque and community centre.
He said: “We have wanted to extend the services we provide, including providing a place for prayer, social events, charitable work and education.
“Planning permission was granted to extend our original premises.
“Unfortunately, due to the need for a bigger venue – and the enthusiasm the new building has generated – events rather overtook us.
“The fact that all this has taken place during Ramadhan has made it difficult.”
“We want to work much more closely with the council and wider community and will be submitting a formal planning application in the next two weeks.”
The application will include a travel plan involving cycling and public transport for visitors, along with warning signs to deter parking in the street.
A spokesman for Leicester City Council said: “There isn’t planning consent for it to be used in that way and, depending on the outcome of the investigation, we would have the power to serve an enforcement notice requiring those activities to cease.”
Suleman Nagdi, spokesman of the Federation of Muslim Organisations, said: “This has happened in the past where people have identified a place, collected the money and purchased it, then applied to the local authority for permission.
“It’s a problem in inner cities of finding suitable places of worship.
“The original mosque in Harewood Street is obviously not big enough.”

Another Own Goal from UAF and Hope not Hate
26 08 2011http://www.cablestreet75.org.uk/events.html
As some of our Marxist/Communists friends will soon realise, crying and screaming for groups and marches to be banned, just because you dont like what the people are saying can come back and bite you on the arse.
See further down the blog, Martin Smith UAF is kicking off because a 30 day march ban means his march is also banned.
He is now saying that this is an attack on civil rights - Yes it is Martin, you wanted to take our rights away and you took away your own. EPIC FAIL
Also, Im sure that the organisers of the 75th anniversary of Cable Street march (see link above) will be happy to know that the ban youve helped impose has stopped them from marching also. You didnt think it through did you?
Cosmic fail
