German Muslims ‘took bomb manuals into UK’

TWO German Islamic converts were caught with bomb-making instructions, gun manuals and jihad magazines as they entered Britain, a court heard yesterday.

Robert Baum, 23, and Christian Emde, 28, were stopped after officials doubted their reason to visit.

After searching their bags, authorities in Dover found literature which included “How to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mother”, “39 ways to support jihad” and “Destroying buildings”.

They also found al-Qaeda emblems on a laptop and holy war pamphlet “Inspire”.

Prosecutor Colin Gibbs told Westminster Magistrates Court: “These are terrorism offences of some seriousness.”

Mr Gibbs said officials “did not believe the pair” after they claimed they had intended to fly to Egypt from Brussels in Belgium but found the flights were too expensive and came to Dover.

Blue-eyed Emde converted in 2003 and Baum within the past three years.

They were charged with possessing information that may be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism. Neither entered a plea.

Both refused to stand, calling it “a forbidden act of worship”. They were remanded to top-security Belmarsh jail until next month.

German men on terror charges remanded

Two German nationals charged with terrorism offences have been remanded in custody by London magistrates.

Christian Emde, 28, and Robert Baum, 23, were arrested earlier this month entering the UK at the port of Dover.

The Muslim converts were charged at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court with collecting or possessing data likely to be useful in a terrorist act.

The men refused to stand in the dock, saying through an interpreter it would be an act of worship against Islam.

They were remanded in custody until 24 August. Neither defendant gave an indication of how they intended to plead to the allegation

Islamist nutter jailed for 12 years – its a start

Bilal Ahmad made the plea to fellow extremists the day after a woman was jailed for trying to kill the MP Stephen Timms at his constituency surgery.

Ahmad used the website she had frequented to praise her actions and call on others to emulate what she had done.

Jailing him at Bristol Crown Court, Mr Justice Royce said: “You purport to be a British citizen but what you stand for is totally alien to what we stand for in our country.

“You became a viper in our midst willing to go to as far as possible to strike at the heart of our system.”

Mr Justice Royce told Ahmad he had sent out a “chillingly clear message: get a knife, get an appointment with the MP and kill him or her.”

The judge said Ahmad’s views attempted to strike at the heart of British democracy and added: “Politicians are often faced with difficult decisions. They don’t always get it right.

“They have to face up to serious criticism on occasions as part of the democratic process – the same can be said for bankers, press barons and judges.

“It is important MPs can hold constituency surgeries without the threat of someone pulling out a knife and trying to kill them.

“If our politicians are to be at risk from those like you, then the message must go out loud and clear that this country will not be tolerate such threats to its democratic processes.”

Ahmad listed the politicians who had voted for the Iraq war and urged others to “raise the knife of jihad” against them.

He offered links to MPs’ personal websites where he said they could find the times and place of their constituency surgeries and posted a link to the Tesco.com website which listed cheap knives for sale.

Mark Dennis QC, prosecuting, told the court: “The defendant’s final words on his entry were to offer up prayers calling for victory to be granted to the Mujahideen, not only in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere, but also ‘in Parliament’ and ‘everywhere’.

Roshonara Choudhry, 21, was jailed in November last year for life for attempted murder. A bright university student, she had radicalised herself over the internet, visiting the Revolution Muslim website and watching videos on Youtube by Anwar al-Awlaki, one of the leaders of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsular. Both websites were hosted in the US.

The day before Choudhry was sentenced, Ahmad posted on Facebook: ‘This sister has put us men to shame. WE SHOULD BE DOING THIS’.

Two days later, he posted on the Metro newspaper website: “I think Timms got let off lightly, in comparison to the countless civilians that have been killed as a direct result of the war he voted for.

“Roshonara Choudhry is a heroine. Free Roshonara Choudhry and give her a medal for justice.”

Ahmad, who at the time was living in Dunstall, Wolverhampton, was arrested in his car on November 10.

The court heard that he was an active contributor to the RevolutionMuslim.com, Islam4UK and IslamicAwakenings.com websites.

Using the names ‘Bilal’ and ‘Abu Juhayman’ he posted his extreme views and said he supported both al-Muhajiroun and Islam4UK before they were banned by the government.

He had also posted on Facebook a link to YouTube where he recorded a video saying: ‘My message to the West. You are all going to die.’

He was also found to have threatened a former spokesman for the right-wing English Defence League with execution and targeted a catholic school in Blackburn, Lancs., with letters after a pupil was forced to remove her veil.

Paul Ray, the former English Defence League official, has since been identified as one of the main influences on Oslo killer Anders Breivik.

Ahmad was born in Warwickshire and held dual British and Pakistani citizenship. He was educated in Scotland and Shropshire, and studied A-levels at Wolverhampton College before attending the University of Central England where he was awarded a 2:2 degree in business information technology.

He worked for a year as a junior development analyst at the Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester and at the time of his arrest he was working for an insurance firm in Telford.

At an earlier hearing Ahmad, from Wollaton, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to soliciting murder, stirring up religious hatred and three counts of collecting information useful to terrorism.

Imran Khan, defending, said Ahmad had fallen in with members of al-Muhajiroun when aged 16 at college because he felt excluded from mainstream society.

Mr Khan said his client’s growing interest in Islam had been at odds with the non-religious upbringing of his parents.
