A grandfather was beaten to the ground by a group of young men who had asked him for a cigarette.

Tom Carnegie, 74, was attacked by four or five men in Belgrave, Leicester, on Good Friday as he walked home from visiting his son.

Recovering at home yesterday, the retired hosiery worker and merchant seaman said: “I don’t know why they did it. This is not the world I grew up in.

“It was a lovely evening and I’d been to see my son and his girlfriend.

“I left them, as I always do, at about 11pm. Everything seemed fine.

“On the way home, I saw this group and just assumed they were locals. They asked me for a cigarette and I said, ‘of course’, because I’m a bit of a softie.

“I don’t really remember what happened next, but they just started hitting me.

“I tried to cover my face and head with my arms, but they got some blows in. I’ve got bruises all over.

“While I was down they went into my pocket and took my cigarette case and my wallet.

“I had £40 or £50 in it because I’d got my pension the day before.”

Police have branded the attack, in Payne Street, off Checketts Road, as “callous”.

They have urged the public to help them catch the gang.

“Hopefully, they will be caught before they do this to someone else,” said Mr Carnegie, a Londoner who moved to Leicester about 20 years ago.

“I will get over this,” he said. “I’ve got a good family around me and a lot of good friends. The wounds are healing, although I’m still a bit stiff.“

An elderly Asian couple found Mr Carnegie in the street and helped him home.

Officers want to trace them as they believe they may be able to help identify his attackers.

John Boyce, of Age Concern in Leicester, said: “While crimes like this are rare, if they become more common we would be diminished as a society. The biggest concern in cases like this is that the victim can lose all confidence and ability to go out again.“

The attackers were Asian, aged about 20 and all about 5ft 10in. They were all wearing black.

Detective Constable Sarah Poppleton said: “This was a nasty attack on an elderly man who was minding his own business. The people who have committed this callous crime need to be caught and we would appeal to the public to help us identify those responsible.”

Weymouth antiracists stand proud as racist EDL event falls flat

Local people from Weymouth stood up proudly against attempts by the English Defence League to stage a demonstration in their town today.

The EDL, an organisation of racist thugs with fascists in its midst, called a demonstration in the Dorset town for 30 April – the anniversary of Hitler’s death in 1945.

They relied on bringing in supporters from towns across the South Coast and beyond, but could still only get around 100 people to turn up. After a prolonged meeting in a pub, the racists made it to their assembly point on the seafront – but their “demonstration” lasted only 10 minutes or so before breaking up.

In contrast, up to 250 overwhelmingly local antiracists held an upbeat and cheerful counter-protest. Weymouth antiracists gathered in the sunshine to hear speakers including Lord Jim Knight, formerly the town’s MP and now a shadow employment minister, West Dorset Liberal Democrat councillor Ros Kayes and UAF joint secretary Weyman Bennett.

Weymouth Trades Council – which has voted to affiliate to UAF – and the local Aslef branch were among the trade unionists who joined the antiracist protest. Demonstrators showed their pride in the town’s diversity by decorating the pavillion with home-made placards.

After the short EDL demo a successful social was held which is still going on now. Massive fail UAF and shame on you expecting people to believe your lies. And the anniversary of Hitlers death? A protest by the English Defence League (EDL) in Dorset has passed off peacefully with no arrests, police have said.

Officers estimated about 300 EDL demonstrators had gathered on Weymouth’s esplanade while about 50 counter-protestors were also present.

The protest lasted for about 10 minutes before the crowd dispersed, a Dorset Police spokesman said.

A number of road closures put in place by police have now been lifted.

Racist attack Burnley

A GANG attack by up to 15 teenagers in the Duke Bar area of Burnley has left two men with head and chest injuries.

Nineteen-year-old friends were walking along Colne Road, between Hurtley Street and New Hall Street, when they were confronted by a gang of Asian youths and subjected to racist abuse.

The friends, both white, were challenged to a fight but were clearly outnumbered, according to police.

One of them was pushed into the road and subjected to kicks and punches.

Police said he was left with chest and rib injuries.

His friend was then pursued by some of the youths, towards Barden Lane, and was also attacked, resulting in him sustaining facial injuries.

Detective Constable Tim Maddox, of Pennine police division’s hate crimes unit, has just issued an appeal for witnesses to the violence, which is thought to have occurred between around 2.30pm and 3pm on Sunday.

“There is believed to have been a bus passing, around that time, and there may have been traffic backed up as a result of the incident,” he added.

The attacks took place close to an area of cleared terrace housing, which also housed the former Derby Arms pub.

Police say the larger group contained between 10 and 15 Asian youths, believed to be in their late teens.

The victims were allowed home after hospital treatment.

Desperate … Tunisian migrants gather in Paris

HORDES of Arab migrants were huddled in camps in Paris last night – poised to flood into the UK to live on state benefits.

Nearly 1,000 North Africans are sleeping rough in parks waiting for the chance to slip across the Channel.

There are fears that it has the makings of a new Sangatte – the notorious French asylum seekers’ camp that turned into a gateway to Britain for thousands.

Refugee … Lamloum

Tunisian and Libyan refugees who fled bloody revolutions in their home countries are clustered in an area of the French capital dubbed Little Tripoli.

The migrants will pay people smugglers up to £1,000 a time to sneak them into the UK. They expect to make the money back within weeks by scrounging off state handouts.

And they believe the British Government – which backed the uprisings in Tunisia and Libya – will welcome them with open arms.

A 22-year-old Tunisian called Ali said: “Britain is like paradise. Friends who have already made it into Britain have told me about the riches you can make there without working.

“I hear the British benefits system is generous. Britain supported our revolution so we will be more than welcome there.”

His countryman Noureddine Bouzoumta, 30, said: “There is nothing for us in France. I sleep outside. I hear the Government in Britain gives money. I want to go to England. I will be rich. I will receive benefits.

“We have heard about your Alex Ferguson, your Ryan Giggs, your Peter Crouch, your cities of London and Manchester, your hospitality.”

The men’s hopes echo those of migrants in the Sangatte camp near the Channel Tunnel outside Calais.

Train operator Eurostar claimed its workers caught 18,500 people trying to sneak into Britain in the first six months of 2001 alone – around 100 a night. It closed after riots.

One of the biggest migrant camps in Paris is at the Porte de Vilette near the Gare du Nord Eurostar Terminal – two hours from Kent.

Visa-less migrants, mostly men in their 20s and 30s, huddle together on mattresses beside the rail tracks. Some build makeshift shacks out of cardboard.

Meanwhile the migrants lead desperate lives, barely surviving on charity food handouts. French cops arrested more than 100 of them yesterday and warned them they will be kicked out of France.

The asylum seekers were accused of breaching residency laws and urged to move to another country – such as Britain.

More than 3,000 migrants, mainly Tunisians, have been arrested in France since the Arab revolts erupted this year.

But the flood of migrants is unlikely to stop while the dream of benefits, housing and earnings from the black economy continues to lure them to the UK.

Migrants from Libya and Tunisia pay gangs 1,000 Euros (£890) to get them to Lampedusa, an Italian island off North Africa.

They claim asylum and then are transported to the Italian mainland and encouraged to head to France.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has promised to do all he can to get rid of the migrants, accusing Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi of allowing them to enter France in the first place.

Ramzi Lamloum, 26, from Tripoli, said he expected more Libyans to join him.

He said: “At the moment there are more Tunisians than Libyans here. The revolution in Tunisia started before the one in Libya so this could be a reason.

“England is a good country. We can make money there.”

Tunisian Abdul Saidi, 34, said: “There is no doubt that we would like to go to England.

“The smugglers charge a lot of money. The risks are big but they can be worth it if we can make the money back.

“People are well treated in England. We will be more welcome there.”

Nizar Tayeb, 23, another Tunisian, said: “We aren’t welcome in France. The police are always asking for papers.

“We thought because we speak French we would be welcome.

“In Britain we are heroes.“

Two years for sex grooming a ’13-year-old’

A man who travelled from London to the Westcountry by rail with the aim of having sex with a 13-year-old girl has been jailed for two years.

Mohammed Kabir, a 23-year-old chemical engineering student, pleaded guilty last December to one count of sexually grooming an under-age girl and two counts of engaging in sexual activity knowing or believing that a child was watching.

At Plymouth Crown Court, prosecutor Jason Beale explained how Kabir, from Plender Street, Camden, had contacted a number of young women and girls on the website Worlds Biggest Chat including one called Amy, who claimed to be a 13-year-old. She was, in fact, a female police officer.

Mr Beale said Kabir asked ‘Amy’ if she was looking for a guy and whether she ever had sex with a man. Later they transferred their conversation onto an online messaging network where the conversation became more “sexual”.

Mr Beale explained how last July Kabir said he would come to Plymouth and meet up with the girl. On July 13 and 20 he exposed himself on his webcam to her while performing an indecent act.

He arranged to visit Plymouth on July 23 but the previous day he claimed he could not afford the train fair or the hotel costs. On July 26 and 27 ‘Amy’ contacted Kabir and he made new arrangements. He said he would come to her house and they could have sex there, with him stating “I’m gonna be your first man”.

On July 29, he caught the train from London, which was joined by undercover police officers at Exeter who watched Kabir regularly texting ‘Amy’. He was arrested at Plymouth rail station.

In mitigation, his advocate Simon Laws said Kabir had no previous convictions and was a “sexually frustrated young man” who “did not have the moral sense to turn away”.

Judge Gilbert sentenced Kabir to 14 months for the online grooming plus ten months each for the online exposure to run concurrently, making a total of two years, less 184 days on remand.

Kabir would also be put on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and be subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for 10 years.
